Psoriasis Q & A

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic condition that causes scaly or itchy skin patches. These symptoms may appear on your scalp, trunk, elbows, knees, and other areas of the body. There’s no cure for psoriasis, and it can cause irritation or embarrassment when left untreated. See a Houston Wellness & Weight Loss Club provider at the first sign of bothersome skin issues.

What are the symptoms of psoriasis?

The hallmark symptoms of psoriasis include skin that is:

  • Itchy
  • Scaly
  • Dry
  • Cracked
  • Rash-like
  • Sore
  • Burning
  • Discolored
  • Bleeding

You might develop a patchy or cyclic rash or skin patches that are gray, purple, black, brown, red, pink, or silver in color.

Psoriasis can also affect your fingernails and toenails, causing nail discoloration, pitting, or abnormal nail growth.

What may increase my risk of psoriasis?

Factors that may increase your chance of developing psoriasis include:

  • Immune system disorders
  • Smoking
  • Family history of psoriasis
  • Infections

Other triggers for psoriasis symptoms include cold, dry weather, skin injuries, heavy alcohol consumption, and taking certain medications. Rapid withdrawal of injected or oral corticosteroids may also play a role.

When not addressed, psoriasis could increase your risk of psoriatic arthritis, other autoimmune diseases, eye conditions, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and mental health conditions like depression.

How is psoriasis diagnosed?

Diagnosing psoriasis involves a review of your medical history, family medical history, and symptoms. Your wellness specialist checks your vital signs, examines your skin and nails, and may take a skin sample (biopsy) and examine it under a microscope to check for psoriasis or other skin disorders.

How does my wellness provider treat psoriasis?

Your psoriasis treatment plan may include:

  • Creams
  • Ointments
  • Light therapy
  • Injections
  • Oral medications
  • Dietary supplements
  • Off-label treatment with Ultherapy

Ultherapy uses painless, focused ultrasound energy to target diseased tissues, reduce bothersome symptoms, and restore healthy skin without pain, risks, or downtime.

Your provider uses a handheld device to emit ultrasound waves into your skin while you relax. You might need multiple treatment sessions to achieve the most benefit.

The Houston Wellness & Weight Loss Club team follows up with you to ensure the success of your treatment. In addition to psoriasis treatments, they offer hormone replacement therapy, medically supervised weight loss, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for hair restoration, intravenous (IV) therapy, and an array of other wellness solutions.
